Captain Blotbeard was the program’s most obvious bad idea.

This is not an insult.

It is his preferred biography.

After the early tests proved that enhanced cephalopods could think, read, decode, and judge humans with devastating accuracy, the military side of Project Perpetual Tide asked the question every doomed military program asks:

Can it be armed?

The answer climbed out of Tank 9, stole a technician’s sandwich, and fired ink through a reinforced door.

Blotbeard was engineered for combat resilience, rapid ink generation, pressure shock tolerance, aggressive improvisation, and resistance to Bonewake’s click. His nervous system could convert panic into action faster than any human unit. His ink was dense, adhesive, corrosive to certain anomaly materials, and impossible to remove from wool.

The lab considered him a strategic breakthrough.

Blotbeard considered the lab full of things that were not nailed down enough.

He learned violence quickly, but he learned ownership faster. The researchers called him prototype. The officers called him asset. The lab techs called him dangerous. He called himself captain before anyone gave him a ship because, in his words, “rank is just theft with better posture.”

The ink cannon began as a containment tool built to direct and measure his output. It became his weapon when he decided the scientists were too attached to having walls.

The whale tooth came from a locked vault.

Officially, it was a recovered biological fragment from an unconfirmed CETUS-000 encounter. Unofficially, it was a piece of Lord Bonewake. Blotbeard stole it because it looked expensive. Later, Squidston discovered that the tooth made Blotbeard’s cannon capable of piercing Clickbound armor and damaging Bonewake’s returned vessels.

Blotbeard has never admitted this was destiny.

He prefers “excellent shopping.”

During the escape, Blotbeard did not flee quietly. He opened specimen tanks, disabled security doors, flooded the east wing, fired ink into the observation gallery, and left a note in the cafeteria that said NOT SORRY in seven languages and one aggressive stain.

He disappeared for years into the shipping lanes, building a vessel from stolen equipment, wreckage, black-market hardware, and a heroic disregard for warranty policy. The ship became The Bad Idea.

By the time Inkbeard and Squidston found him again, Blotbeard had reinvented himself as a pirate, privateer, disaster consultant, and freelance enemy of things larger than him.

He claimed he wanted treasure.

Sometimes he did.

He claimed he hated humans.

Sometimes he did.

He claimed he did not care about saving the world.

Nobody believed that for long.

Blotbeard’s anger is real. He remembers the weapons tests. He remembers the restraints. He remembers being praised only when he destroyed something on command. He hates anyone who treats a living being like equipment.

That is why he fights Bonewake.

Bonewake is the ultimate owner. The final tyrant. The mouth that believes everything else is his to swallow.

Blotbeard cannot allow that.

Not because he is noble.

Because no one owns him, and no one gets to own the sea.
